Let’s try this again….. iPad
I’m just gonna focus on the pros and cons here. All of the technical stuff you can find off of Apple.com or Engadget.com.
Pros
- It looks amazing. Nice how they pretty much combined the Kindle and an iPhone into one.
- Looks very portable and easy to use (if you know how to use an iPhone/iPod Touch then you are already an expert). It will probably change the way that netbooks and laptops are operated.
- I see web developers and graphic designers buying this to display projects.
- Thank God they are coming out with a keyboard attachment with this or else I would kill myself typing full documents out on touchscreen.
- Also available, a nice case that makes it look like a portfolio.
- WiFi and 3G (oh, I’ll touch on that later).
- iBooks looks promising. If Steve Jobs can work out a deal with iBooks and libraries it would be cool. If he can work out a deal with college textbook publishers, then it would be a Godsend for college students.
- Under $1000. The most expensive one is $829.
Cons
- AT&T service. I call it a deal breaker right there! How AT&T got the deal for service, I have no idea! I guess Steve Jobs didn’t learn from the first time. Though no contract requirements helps a little.
- No USB or SD ports. Which means that the only way you can transfer documents and other stuff is thru iTunes. For example, if you have to print out something you have to download it to a computer with a printer and iTunes. Good luck with printing up last minute documents with it!
- No multitasking. Hopefully that can be fixed with a firmware update. Funny how those AT&T commercials criticize Verizon for not being able to multitask and yet the iPad can’t multitask.
- No Flash support. You pretty much need Flash to run most websites nowadays.
- Even though it’s portable, it doesn’t look very light. Hello, sore wrists!
- No camera. Granted no one would have bought it to take pictures with it, but having the ability to video conference with it would have set it over the edge.
- Only goes up to 64GB. Granted it’s running flash memory, but I filled up 60GB on PS3 game saves alone.
- No Office support. It uses iWork, but who uses iWork?
Bottom line is that while the iPad is a good product, this is not going to replace your laptop/computer which a lot of people thought it would. Someone on Engadget said that “this is only an accessory to your laptop,” and I believe that quote suits the iPad well. My opinion probably will change in a couple of months when I go up to the Apple Store to play with it. But to quote Randy Jackson, “I don’t know, dogg!”
